The Red Sox Racing League began Season Two of 2012 at the Daytona International Speedway’s road course. Despite giving considerable thought to using the recently released Cadillac as the Class B vehicle, league officials decided to stick with the Corvette C6R for this season. “We may switch to the Cadillac for Season Three, or add a third class if we can build both fields”, said Jeff Thomas before the race began. “But we needed a little more time to hammer out the fixed setups and did not want to rush into this season with a car that wasn’t fully tested.” The “RUF Automobile Presents 24 Laps of Daytona” was billed as a 24 lap race of endurance. With eight new drivers hitting the track as members of the RSR league, [...]

Jorge Lorenzo admits he is not happy to have qualified on the second row for MotoGP’s French Grand Prix, but says victory is still not beyond his reach. Having qualified on pole for the opening two races in 2012, the Spaniard has now missed out on the front row in the past two straights races – the first time he has done so since June last year. Lorenzo said Andrea Dovizioso’s pace on board the satellite Tech 3 Yamaha meant the front row was not possible, even if he had the potential to push harder and find time in the difficult conditions.

The IIHS Top Safety Pick list is already quite long, but it keeps growing, with five more vehicles added this month alone. The latest pair are the 2012 BMW 3 Series sedan and the 2013 Acura RDX. The BMW needs no introduction, as the new F30 chassis has already earned its right to sit alongside previous generations of the well-loved sport sedan, while the RDX is a refreshed version of the midsize Acura crossover.
Both vehicles earned their listed status by upgrading the strength of their roofs. The previous-generation 3 Series scored only acceptable on roof strength testing, while the 2007-2012 RDX earned a marginal rating. The newest models are now rated “good” for roof strength.

Mark Winterbottom escaped to victory in a spectacular first V8 Supercars race at Phillip Island, as his title rivals Jamie Whincup and Will Davison collided amid a wild dice for second place. Shane van Gisbergen fought through from 11th on the grid to take second in the Stone Brothers Ford, while his team-mate Tim Slade fended off Garth Tander (Holden Racing Team) for third. Ford filled the podium, but for much of the race it looked like it would be the Ford Performance Racing team itself that took the top three sweep

Will Davison resisted a flying Craig Lowndes to win the second V8 Supercars race at Phillip Island and move into the championship lead. Polesitter Lowndes stalled his Triple Eight Holden at the start and tumbled to ninth, then began a comeback charge that almost took him to victory in the 45-lap race, which saw four safety car interruptions. Going into the final lap, Lowndes finally had long-time leader Davison (Ford Performance Racing) in sight, but Davison had enough to hand to hold his rival at bay and win by half a second

Pedro de la Rosa thinks HRT will be closer to the rest of the field at the Monaco Grand Prix, and is confident that the demands of the Monte Carlo circuit will not be such a handicap for its car. With the team still playing catch-up after a late debut for its F112, de la Rosa reckons that he and team-mate Narain Karthikeyan will not be at such a disadvantage as they were at the Spanish Grand Prix. “Monaco is by far the most difficult and technical circuit in the entire championship,” said the Spaniard.

Williams has quashed speculation that Bruno Senna’s place at the team is under threat if the Brazilian does not lift his game over the next few races. While Senna’s team-mate Pastor Maldonado delivered a brilliant victory from pole position in Spain, Senna endured a tougher weekend – spinning out of Q1 and then crashing out of the race after a collision with Michael Schumacher. That performance prompted rumours that Williams could make a push for test driver Valtteri Bottas to make the step up, with his speed in Friday practice sessions this year having impressed his bosses

Marc Marquez claimed his third consecutive Moto2 pole position despite falling as rain effectively brought qualifying at Le Mans to an early conclusion. The Spaniard, yet to start lower than second in 2012, rose to the top almost immediately after the session began, and soon dropped down to a 1m37.710s. Fifteen minutes into the session he lost the front at Turn 8, sliding into the gravel, but was able to rejoin with help from marshals and returned to the pits for repairs
